Researchers also found that ocean temperatures have broken records for several consecutive years.

"If you want to see where global warming is happening, look in our oceans", said Zeke Hausfather, a graduate student in the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-author of the paper.

Four studies included in the analysis, which were published from 2014 to 2018, correct errors between different ocean temperature measurements and provide a better interpretation of past ocean warming trends.

About 93 percent of excess heat - trapped around the Earth by greenhouse gases that come from the burning of fossil fuels - accumulates in the world's oceans.

If humans don't do anything to mitigate climate change, warming in the upper part of the ocean will be six times higher by 2081-2100 than total ocean warming in the past 60 years, researchers estimate. The new article, led by Dr. Lijing Cheng of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlights how the new observations along with adjusted older records now clearly show not only how the ocean is warming but that the warming is accelerating. That would mean a sea level rise of 30 centimeters or about a foot in addition to the rise in sea levels caused by melting of glaciers and ice sheets.

The oceans are warming at a faster rate than was thought, according to the biggest analysis of sea temperatures so far. 2018 is likely to be the hottest year for the oceans on record, beating out 2017 which held the record.

A key factor in the more accurate numbers is an ocean monitoring fleet called Argo, which includes almost 4,000 floating robots that "drift throughout the world's oceans, every few days diving to a depth of 2,000 meters (yards) and measuring the ocean's temperature, pH, salinity and other bits of information as they rise back up", said the report. According to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) models, the temperature of the top 2,000 meters of global oceans will increase by 0.78 degrees Celsius by 2099. This ocean-monitoring battalion, called Argo, has provided consistent and widespread data on ocean heat content since the mid-2000s.

'For example, even if we meet the target of Paris Agreement (to limit climate change), ocean will continue warming and sea level will continue rise.

Jayme Closs' family says she is 'full of big smiles' Saturday
Owner Karen Beeler said she's run the place for 22 years and had never heard of the family before Jake Patterson was arrested. Jayme's grandfather Robert Naiberg reiterated Saturday that the family had no connection with Patterson and didn't know him.

The robots dive to a depth of 2000 metres every few days, recording the temperature as they float back up to the surface.

Ocean warming is reducing the levels of oxygen in the oceans and affects the coral reefs around the world.

A warmer ocean also contributes to increases in rainfall and leads to stronger and longer-lasting storms like Hurricanes Florence and Harvey.
