Trump lashes out at Pelosi over rejected government shutdown proposal

Trump outlined a plan to end the government shutdown on Saturday, offering congressional Democrats three years of legislative relief for 700,000 DACA recipients - including protection from deportation - and an extension of legal residence for people living in the country under "Temporary Protective Status" designations. President Trump said 'bring me the ideas from all sides, let's put them all on the table.' The president has made it clear what he would support.

Pelosi also called out the proposal's stance on DACA and TPS recipients, saying a permanent solution was needed instead.

The announcement, via Twitter, comes a day after far-right groups panned immigration policy changes he proposed as a way out of the partial government shutdown.

"Neither one is trusting the other one". "Our immigration system should be the subject of pride, not a source of shame as it is all over the world".

Trump has considered various proposals that would, in theory, allow him to shift money and resources to try to build the wall, but there are political, logistical and legal pitfalls that make those options hard.

Meanwhile, as the longest government shutdown in USA history reaches the one month mark, over 800,000 federal workers remain furloughed or working without pay while Trump and Pelosi engage in a political tit-for-tat.

"Democrats were not consulted on this and have rejected similar overtures in the past". Trump is "holding federal workers hostage, saying he'll temporarily give back what he took away-only if we give him a pointless, ineffective wall", Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand from NY tweeted after the president's remarks.

Even before he spoke, however, the deal appeared to be a non-starter for Democrats.

Negotiations have been at an impasse for weeks over Trump's demand for money to fund his border wall. "Democrats are for border security, but we want to talk about it".

Trump's son-in-law and senior aide, Jared Kushner, has led the work on the proposals, said three people familiar with White House thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly.

Trump embraced the shutdown in December in large part because of angry warnings from his most ardent supporters that he was passing up on his last, best shot to build the wall before Democrat took control of the House in the new year.

Approximately 800,000 federal workers are impacted by the government shutdown, many not receiving a paycheck or working without pay. Federal contractors, not included in that number, are now losing $200 million a day.

Trump's proposal comes as House Democrats are pushing forward with legislation to beef up security at the borders - without funding for the wall - a move bound to intensify the standoff over a partial government shutdown heading into its fifth week. What we can not do, and I've actually had Republicans as well recognize this, is that we can not reward the kind of behavior of hostage taking. Second, I cannot support the proposed offer as reported and do not believe it can pass the Senate. We have passed many bipartisan options for Leader Mitch McConnell to immediately take up and allow for a vote on the Senate floor to open the federal government. "Third, I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues".

The president accused Pelosi of behaving "irrationally" for turning down his offer.

Republicans have a 53-seat majority in the upper chamber and need seven Democrats to vote yes in order to move the president's deal on the path to passage.
