Maduro, 56, was sworn in by Supreme Court president Maikel Moreno, amid cheers and applause by a crowd of hundreds attending the inauguration in Caracas.

Maduro was sworn in for a second six-year term under a cloud of skyrocketing inflation, shortages of basic food and medicine and an exodus of Venezuelans to neighbouring countries, following an election that was boycotted by the opposition.

The EU deeply regrets that its call for "fresh presidential elections in accordance with internationally recognised democratic standards and the Venezuelan constitutional order" was ignored and that President Maduro is today starting a new mandate on the basis of non-democratic elections.

The inauguration comes amid threats of military interventions and coups against the progressive government by the United States and its allies in Latin America.

Canada has provided $2.2-million in humanitarian assistance to Venezuela and is a member of the Lima Group of countries that is trying to bring worldwide pressure to bear on the South American country.

Maduro insists the election was fair and that the opposition did not participate because it knew it would lose.

Leftist presidents Miguel Diaz-Canel of Cuba, Evo Morales of Bolivia, El Salvador's Salvador Sanchez Ceren and Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega were present for the inauguration, as were representatives of Russia, China and Turkey.

"Nobody (in the US government) would be surprised if (Padrino) stepped back", the source added.

Maduro vowed to fight his enemies in the spirit of former president Hugo Chavez, and accused the US of stoking the unrest through the sanctions.
