Winter storm warnings and watches have been issued for the tri-state as a second, more potent, storm is expected to slam the area with heavy snow, sleet and ice this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm was forecast to bring between up to 25 centimetres of snow to the Midwest before walloping New York, Pennsylvania and other northeastern states on Sunday, where it could dump up to 61 centimetres of snow. Travelers should plan on very slippery road conditions. Intervals of moderate snowfall will be possible during this time.> Additional accumulations between 1 and 2 inches are expected through 4 pm.

After 2 p.m., that snow is expected to blow around with winds expected to be between 17 and 24 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

The storm is expected to bring 12-18 inches of snow to the Bangor area and much of eastern Maine. Some northern parts of New England could see up to 18 inches (46 centimetres) of snow.

People throughout parts of the Midwest have awakened to a heavy and steady fall of snow that's forced the cancellation of hundreds of airline flights and made driving unsafe. Areas where the storm had already moved out by midday faced bitter cold and strong winds.

Travel could be "very hard to impossible", with areas of blowing snow that could significantly reduce visibility and cause hazardous travel.

In Chicago, where some neighborhoods received 8 inches (20 cm) of snow, a third of flights were canceled at the city's two main airports, said Mark Duell, vice president of operations for tracking firm FlightAware. From Friday through Sunday, the severe weather was expected to trigger the cancellation of more than 3,000 flights in the United States, Duell said. Amtrak cancelled some trains Saturday from Chicago to Washington and NY and between NY and Boston and Pennsylvania on Sunday.

As the storm quickly pushes east, forecasters expect a substantial amount of precipitation Saturday evening through Sunday up and down the East Coast.

The snow will be followed on Monday by bitterly cold temperatures zero to 10 degrees below and daytime highs in the single digits in the south and mid-teens in the north, according to Walker and Sinsabaugh.
