During the match she was given three code violations by Carlos Ramos - the first for receiving coaching, the second for racquet abuse and the third for verbal abuse of the umpire.

Under the headline "Welcome to PC world", the paper said: "If the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very boring indeed".

Knight's illustration references the moment Williams smashed her tennis racket on the court in anger after umpire Carlos Ramos penalized her for a coaching violation.

"I thought about those things watching Serena, and I said, 'This kid has been playing all of these years, and I don't think she's ever been accused of cheating before it happened on Saturday.'" he said, "And [tennis coaches], they all cheat, no matter how you look at it".

"It rightly mocks poor behaviour by a tennis legend", Johnson tweeted.

"I think for this year my immediate goal would be to get to Singapore", said Osaka after putting herself firmly in contention to reach the season-ending WTA Finals. "It's because I am a woman, and that's not right".

USA player Steve Johnson added: "Look, I don't want this to come out the wrong way, but he enforced rules that have been enforced on me over the years".
