World No.1 Simona Halep will face seven-time Australian Open champion Serena Williams in a standout fourth-round clash after downing Venus Williams 6-2 6-3 in imperious fashion.

Halep has struggled for form and fitness since her first-round defeat at the U.S. Open last August and came to Australia on a five-match losing streak and without a coach after long-serving Darren Cahill left for "family reasons".

'She was when I was younger, but now I don't feel intimidated any more, ' she said after her 6-2 6-3 win.

The 18-year-old was in tears after her drubbing and Williams comforted her at the net, telling her "you're gonna make it, don't cry".

"I kind of liked that". It shows she wasn't just there to play a good match, she was there to win. Her opponents, on the other hand, are learning it's tough to win a match while in awe of the woman on the other side of the net. It really broke my heart. "I haven't played the world No. 1 since I've been back, I don't think", Serena, correctly, added.

"I have huge respect for her because she's a great champion, but she's just an opponent next round". The latest incident why she is trending is for her sweet gesture towards her Ukranian opponent Dayana Yastremska.

"I just want to try to play my best tennis", Halep said, "because I have nothing to lose".

An Osaka-Williams tussle would bring much hype given their eventful US Open final but the Japanese was nearly upset earlier Saturday by the crafty 28th-seed Hsieh Su-Wei.

Men's matchups Monday with a quarterfinal berth at stake will be: No. 1 Novak Djokovic against No. 15 Daniil Medvedev, and 2014 U.S. Open finalist Kei Nishikori against No. 23 Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Williams grabbed a pair of service breaks and a 4-0 lead after less than 15 minutes and was well on her way to yet another easy-looking win. By the end of the first set, the teenager had 13 unforced errors, nine more than Williams.

"In my opinion, to be No. 1 in the world and to be the best player in the world, it's a little bit different", Halep said.

She was born in 2000, the year after Serena won her initial major, and grew up cheering for someone she calls "a legend". Unfortunately, it wasn't almost enough to stop the 37-year-old easing to victory.

"It's important we all have each other's back and support each other", Williams said. Osaka had earlier shown her frustration by, unusually, throwing her racket to the ground to earn a warning and took a tumble on court trying to counter Hsieh's unpredictable shots.
